American Plum: A wonderful native tree

American Plum (Prunus americana) is a native fruit tree in Kentucky and the surrounding region. The aromatic early Spring blossoms draw many pollinators, which enable the tree to provide edible fruit in the Fall. American Plum can sucker and form thickets if left to its own devices. In addition to all of this, the American Plum is a host plant for many butterfly and moth caterpillars. If every property owner just removed one invasive, non-native tree or shrub and replaced it with a native species, the earth would breathe so much more easily.
